The first onshore power supply connection in the port of Helsinki’s Vuosaari harbour has come online.
The system is being used by the Finnlines vessels Finnmaid, Finnstar and Finnlady, which are moving cargo and passenger traffic between Helsinki and Travemünde. Thomas Doepel, vice president and deputy ceo of Finnlines, said onshore power is supplied at both gateways.
The system on quay C in Vuosaari includes a 4 MW transformer and two remote-controlled cable cranes. Electric Power Finland was responsible for the system design and electrical installations, while the port carried out the foundations and cable installations.
Preparations to expand the system to cover ro-ro shipping services, as well as lo-lo transport, are under way and should come onstream in 2026.
