Port Houston reported a strong surge in activity at its multipurpose facilities in September 2024. Steel imports were up 25 percent year on year.

Total tonnage across all Port Houston’s public facilities is 39.4 million tons through the first nine months of the year, growth of 4 percent compared to 2023. Total container volume for the month of September was 329,462 teu, an increase of 1 percent compared to September 2023. It has handled 3.12 million teu so far this year, a 10 percent year on year increase.

Port Houston has invested heavily in the Houston ship channel expansion project, known as Project 11, and ceo Charlie Jenkins highlighted the role the port plays play in supporting the region’s economic vitality. “We are excited to see larger ships arrive to Bayport, but Project 11 is bigger than our public terminals. It’s a vital project for our nation’s largest petrochemical complex. It’s important for safety along the waterway, and it helps secure the positive economic impacts the channel has for generations to come.”
