Transport Canada has allocated CAD6.7 million (USD5 million) in funding for two projects at the port of Thunder Bay through the National Trade Corridors Fund.
Up to CAD3 million (USD2.3 million) will go towards redeveloping the existing marshalling yard at the Keefer Terminal, adding a new heavyweight rail track and switches that will increase the port’s cargo handling capabilities.
A further CAD3.7 million (USD2.7 million) will be used by the port of Thunder Bay to enhance capacity by upgrading the wharf at the Keefer Terminal; expanding the terminal’s cargo laydown area; developing electrical infrastructure for the new laydown area; and improving the rail crossing infrastructure between the Keefer Terminal and the marshalling yard.
The projects will enable the port to support a variety of industries, including grain, potash and phosphate fertilisers as well as steel, wind turbine components and transformers.
