Up to GBP10 million (USD12.94 million) worth of investment has been approved by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to support development of the port of Nigg’s inner east quay.

Ultimately leading to the creation of a new heavy-duty quayside as well as the introduction of ro-ro capability, the project will increase the port’s capabilities whilst attracting new companies and investment. It is subject to formal approval by Global Energy Nigg.

HIE’s investment is part of the Scottish government’s plans to spend up to GBP500 million (USD646.95 million) over five years to reaffirm the country’s offshore wind supply chain.

The port of Nigg is deemed a crucial location for manufacturing and assembly of offshore wind components, having managed over 3.5 GW of assets through the site. In 2024, Sumitomo Electric Power Cables established a GBP350 million (USD452.87 million) high-voltage cable manufacturing facility in the area, meanwhile the port secured Customs site status in February 2025.

“Given its location and being part of Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport, the port of Nigg is strategically important to the growth and success of the offshore wind sector,” said deputy first minister of Scotland, Kate Forbes. “An investment of this nature sends a clear signal to investors that Scotland is open for business.”

Chairman of Global Energy Group (GEG), Roy MacGregor, added: “Today, renewables account for half of our revenue at both GEG and Nigg, underlining the critical role this sector plays in our business and the wider economy. Strategically positioned to support Scotland’s future offshore wind projects… Nigg will drive sustainable job creation and long-term economic prosperity for the Highlands.”

The project is being led by Global Energy Nigg, a subsidiary of GEG – which acquired the port of Nigg in 2011.

Last week, HLPFI reported that the port of Cromarty Firth will receive funding from the UK government to support expansion.
