Indian dock workers are again calling for an indefinite strike across all major ports starting on December 17, 2024, if the government fails to implement wage revisions and productivity schemes before December 15, 2024.

HLPFI reported in August that Indian ports were at risk of industrial action. At that time, the All-India Port and Dock Workers’ Federation said that an indefinite nationwide strike could come into effect on August 28 as no resolution had been reached on pay and conditions following 31 months of negotiations. The strike was averted at the last minute as government officials and unions worked on a new deal on wages, service conditions and pensions.

A circular from Mumbai-based Sai Shipping now suggests that negotiations on overpay and pension benefits have dragged on with no breakthrough in negotiations. “As the situation unfolds, our team is working to assess any impact on operations and are in close communication with all relevant parties to ensure delivering the latest updates that might impact your cargo planning,” said the company.
