The port of Humboldt Bay in the USA has received a USD436.7 million grant to support the development of its heavy lift terminal that will provide logistical support for offshore wind energy projects.
The grant from the Department of Transportation’s Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects (INFRA) programme will support the construction and maintenance of the terminal at the Redwood Marine Terminal site on the Samoa Peninsula.
The project is designed to serve as a multipurpose port facility primarily to support offshore wind throughout the west coast of the USA.
Last year, the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District received a USD8.7 million government grant for the project to fund studies, site design, and permitting activities for the offshore wind facilities at the terminal.
Prior to that, the development of the port into a hub for offshore wind energy garnered the attention of Crowley Wind Services, which entered an exclusive right to negotiate as a partner for its development, design and operation. Crowley subsequently opened a wind services office in Eureka, California, as part of its plans to develop the offshore wind terminal.
