May 26 - In the first quarter of 2017, the Port of Hamburg's total throughput was up by 1.7 percent at 35.4 million tons (32.1 million tonnes), comparable to the same period last year.
Bulk cargo throughput was 6.7 percent higher at 12.2 million tons (11.1 million tonnes) and general cargo handling, at 23.1 million tons (20.9 million tonnes), was 0.7 percent lower than the corresponding period in 2016.
Within the general cargo handling figures, containerised cargo dropped by 0.3 percent while conventional general cargo handling was 22 percent lower than the previous year, with a total of 324,000 tons (293,927.9 tonnes).
According to Ingo Egloff, joint ceo of Port of Hamburg marketing, this was likely caused by the withdrawal of the Buss Hansa Terminal handling facility and a downturn in ro-ro traffic with Africa, caused by lower demand.
