The UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and power generation company EDF Energy, have recognised Bristol Port for its role in the logistics supply chain for EDF’s Hinckley Point C nuclear power plant.
“The site is only 32 sea miles from us, 45 road miles, and we’ve become involved in every single element of the logistics supply chain,” said Bristol Port ceo David Brown.
“Sea transport is a very efficient and clean way to move very heavy items, from wherever they have been manufactured, into Bristol. The port acts as a muster point en route to Combwich Wharf, and onwards to the site itself.”
One of the main contractors for the project, Balfour Beatty, recently moved on to the port estate, where it will manufacture tunnel sections and underwater heads that will provide the power station with cooling water.
The port said that additional land is also being provided for the storage of abnormal indivisible loads – equipment that will travel to Hinckley by barge as it is too big to move by road.
