November 7 - Authorities working to restore port activity in New York and New Jersey after HurricaneSandy are bracing themselves for a further storm this week which could hamper restoration efforts.
Weather forecasters are tracking another coastal storm which could bring sideways rain, 90 km/h winds that may cause more power outages and stir up 7 m waves that could cause more coastal flooding later this week.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) managed to reopen its container terminals yesterday, except the Red Hook Container Terminal Port Newark which remains closed indefinitely.
Port authority staff and engineers remain on site at all authority facilities to inspect conditions, assess damage and perform repair work, says the PANYNJ. The port faced unprecedented challenges as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The storm surge caused nearly 1.3 m of water throughout the port. Round the clock cleanup efforts have repaired damaged roadways, hundreds of displaced shipping containers, fixed rail lines, damaged electrical systems and other port cargo.
