The port of Townsville in Australia has completed the AUD40.7 million (USD31.2 million) upgrade of its Berth 4 container and general cargo facility.
The two-year project has resulted in a full upgrade of the inner harbour berth, enabling larger vessels to call at the port. The project doubled the capacity of Berth 4 and has increased the throughput capacity of the port by 20 percent.
While the berth has now officially opened, the next phase of the project will see investment in cargo handling infrastructure.
Port of Townsville ceo, Ranee Crosby, said: "This latest investment is part of a programme of works to ensure international shipping lines have reliable and efficient berth access, giving our customers efficient infrastructure to handle their cargoes.
"The next step will be a AUD27.3 million (USD20.9 million) investment into state-of-the-art cranes and cargo handling infrastructure at Berth 4, which will commence this year."
