October 5 - With three members of HLPFI staff at the Air Cargo Forum in Atlanta and two others heading to Houston for next week's Breakbulk America's event, it's been a little like the Marie Celeste in our head office this week.
The news that Turkey, a key regional player in the project cargo and heavy lift operations, suffered a mortar attack from Syria this week and that it was gearing up for an escalation of tension between the two countries, will not have escaped the notice of companies operating or transiting project cargo through this pivotal country. New routes may now have to be plotted to avoid the country and those doing business in the country may yet be forced to re-think involvement in developments in the country, especially in the border region with Syria. HLPFI, of course, remains neutral in such matters but our team of reporters will continue to monitor the situation in the region.
In business news this week, two flag states have raised concerns about container weighing proposals that will almost certainly delay efforts to bring in mandatory regulations, though not stop them altogether. The two flag states concerned, Panama and Cyprus, said during an IMO meeting that more work needs to be done, although they are not opposed in principle to weight checks. Rather, they want to ensure that all aspects are thoroughly considered before legislation is enacted. In response, the TT Club - www.ttclub.com - rushed out a statement urging all parties to redouble efforts to formulate an acceptable global regulation on container weight verification. The insurer urges all those involved in container operations to prepare for regulatory change.
Meanwhile, Crowley Maritime Corporation's - www.crowley.com - recently acquired Houston, US-based, freight forwarding, export packing and logistics company, Jarvis International Freight, Inc., will transition into the parent company as a new branch of Crowley Logistics, offering project logistics and global freight management services to a wider array of industries and in more geographic locations.
It was 'full steam ahead' this week as project handling stevedores at the Port of Liverpool - www.peelports.co.uk - became the latest stage in a transatlantic project cargo movement to bring two historic steam locomotives back to the UK. The landing of two 94-tonne locomotives and their accompanying coal tenders took place during an 11-hour mooring by ACL's (Atlantic Container Line) - www.aclcargo.com - Atlantic Conveyor 51,648 dwt ro-ro/container carrier. HLPFI's very own Casey Jones (James Graham) was on hand to record the news.
Also this week, it was picture perfect when IAG Cargo - www.iagcargo.com, the single business unit of British Airways World Cargo and Iberia Cargo, transported 50 oil paintings belonging to the Fundación Guayasamín from Quito, Ecuador, to Madrid, Spain for an exhibition in the Santa Catalina Castle in Cadiz, during celebrations of the Iberia-sponsored Bicentennial of the drafting of Spain's first written Constitution in the city.
In the air, Saudi Airlines Cargo - www.saudiacargo.com - will provide access to nine additional destinations in West Africa via its hub in Lagos, Nigeria with a daily B747 freighter. Through its Lagos hub and interline partners, Saudia Cargo will now be able to serve the cities of Abidjan, Accra, Cotonou, Douala, Libreville, Lome, Malabo, Niamey and Ouagadougou. Silky and smooth, once again Volga-Dnepr Airlines - www.volga-dnepr.com - supported the air unit participating in the Silk Way Rally 2012, where some 100 cars and 25 trucks competed in the 4,000 km event from Moscow to the Russian city of Sochi, host of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Forwarder news this week saw Abnormal Load Services (International) Limited (ALS) - www.als-europe.com - put down roots as it reported the move of 10 rainforest tree stumps in the latest phase of Angela Palmer's Ghost Forest Project. ALS handled the logistics involved in moving the exhibits from the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, UK to the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Llanarthne. In the Czech Republic, DSV - www.dsv.com - has signed an agreement for the acquisition of certain activities from AWT Cechofracht a.s. - www.awt-cechofracht.cz
Port news this week saw the completion of the final asphalting at the J. Müller Breakbulk Terminal - www.jmueller.de - in Brake, Germany, which means another 40,000 sq m of warehouse space is now available at the new harbour on the port's Niedersachsenkai, giving it 12 ha of operational area. King Fahd Industrial Port - www.ports.gov.sa - in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia has handled two huge adapters carried from Korea onboard Hanjin Pioneer and belonging to the Marafiq company. The general director of King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu, Captain Abdullah Al-Zami, stated that these pieces are among the largest pieces received by the port. The German port of Stade, part of the the Seaports of Niedersachsen group - www.seaports.de - saw 10 lifeboats and one tender boat loaded onboard Peter Dohle Schiffahrts' - www.doehle.de - Catalina D. All were destined for the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.
In what looks like a very interesting innovation, Peters & May - www.www.petersandmay.com - in conjunction with Marine Invest, have signed an exclusive agreement securing the use of the patented Flat Rail - www.flat-rail.com - system in the UK, Italy and the USA. Peters & May says that the new system will allow it to ship yachts between 13.00 m and 16.50 m in length on a 40 ft flat rack instead of the traditional method of shipment, which can sometimes prove uneconomical for yachts in this size bracket.
Meanwhile, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) - www.2wglobal.com - has added Antofagasta, Chile, to its ocean service route along South America's West Coast, offering a monthly call in addition to its current service to the ports of Guayaquil, Ecuador and Callao, Peru. Cargo transported on this route is primarily a mix of heavy equipment and break bulk.
On the personnel front, Steve Buckerfield has been appointed managing director of UK operation for Toll Global Forwarding - www.tollgroup.com In his new post at TGF, he will assume responsibility for over 400 staff at 15 locations, collectively providing a comprehensive range of multimodal forwarding and logistics solutions. Blue Water Shipping - www.bws.dk - founder and managing director, Kurt Skov is stepping down and will entrust the chief executive position to Kim Hedegaard Sørensen. At the same time as these individual appointments, Industrial Training International (ITI) - www.iti.com - reports a doubling of its employee head-count in the last 28 months adding instructors in the USA and Canada and business professionals at its corporate headquarters in Woodland, Washington. In upcoming months ITI will be adding human capital in marketing and administration in Woodland, as well as its new branch office in Edmonton, Alberta.
Work is well underway on issue 29 of HLPFI, which will include features on cargo warranty surveying, inland waterways, equipment hire companies, power generation - non-renewable energies, France, the Nordic countries, South Africa as well as Austria and Switzerland.
