Denmark’s Port Esbjerg confirmed that it would build another 40,000 sq m multipurpose terminal in the eastern port area.

Dennis Jul Pedersen, port director at Port Esbjerg, explained that the site is being developed in response to an increasing demand for space to store and export a range of cargoes including cars and containers, as well as wind energy components. He added: “The new terminal is intended to meet that demand, giving our customers the best possible conditions for running and developing their business.”

The USD2.3 million terminal is scheduled to come online at the end of 2019. It will be located adjacent to the two existing multipurpose terminals at the port, which are operated by Blue Water Shipping and Scandinavian Auto Logistics.

An invitation to tender for the construction of the terminal will be issued in the coming weeks, said Port Esbjerg.

Extra additions

HLPFI reported in May 2019 that the port placed an order with Liebherr for its largest mobile harbour crane, the LHM 800. The 308-tonne lifting capacity machine has a height of 48 m and a boom length of 66 m. It will be delivered during August 2019.

The need for the LHM 800 has also been driven by developments in the offshore industry, as wind turbine components destined for North Sea projects increase in size and weight, said the port.
