Bore and Wijnne Barends, both part of the Spliethoff Group, have partnered with UPM to design and build seven newbuild ships for the latter’s transport operations in Europe.
Bore has placed an order for three ro-ro vessels that will transport UPM’s paper products; Wijnne Barends will develop four lo-lo vessels for the company’s pulp and other forest products. The ships will be built in China and are scheduled for delivery in 2021 and 2022.
Upon delivery, the newbuilds will enter into a long-term charter agreement with UPM, which will be responsible for the ships' operations.
They will be ice-strengthened and fuelled by LNG. According Lauri Rikala, director, global breakbulk shipping at UPM Logistics, this will result in a 25 percent reduction of CO2 emissions compared with the use of marine gas oil.
“In addition, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions will decrease by approximately 85 percent and 99 percent, respectively,” he added.
