September 25 - Five tidal turbines, designed and produced by Tocardo Tidal Turbines and Huisman, have been installed in the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier.
The 50 m long x 20 m wide tidal power plant was transported by sea to the Neeltje Jans island before being lifted onto a floating pontoon and installed between pillars under the barrier.
"This project marks an important step in the development of tidal energy," said Tocardo ceo Hans van Breugel. "Tidal technology is innovative and could grow into a significant Dutch export product. The export expectation of tidal energy is more than 200 GW."
Mammoet was responsible for the transportation of the tidal power plant to the storm surge barrier, as well as the installation of the turbines.
