The Spanish port of Tarragona handled 2.6 million tons of cargo in June 2021, an increase of 43.9 percent compared to June 2020.
Figures recorded in the first five months of the year showed that the port grew by 14.8 percent compared to the same period in 2020. According to Tarragona, this makes it the fastest growing port in the Spanish port system.
The baseline for this growth was the port’s 2020 performance, which saw a 19.3 percent fall in freight traffic. Tarragona’s docks handled 26.8 million tons of cargo last year, a figure that is expected to be considerably exceeded in 2021 – the port is hoping to surpass the 30 million ton barrier.
June’s figures were bolstered largely by the port’s handling of bulk liquids but there has also been growth in general cargo handling – the port handled 190,086 tons of general cargo in June, an increase of 56.5 percent compared to 2020’s figures.
Tarragona also highlighted the movement of iron and steel products in the first half of the year, with 403,000 tons handled – an increase of 90.2 percent over the previous year – making it the port’s best year on record.
