October 14 - ZIM's special cargo team has handled the shipment of a 100-tonne and 28 m long yacht from Asia to the Port of Savannah, Georgia, making use of the latter's new barge crane, the Savannah Giant, for the first time.
The barge crane was positioned alongside Zim Ontario to make the lift and offload the yacht before transporting it in the crane's cradle from Garden City Terminal down river to Ocean Terminal.
"The Savannah Giant is a valuable addition to our offerings at the Port of Savannah, with a capacity of up to 500 short tonnes," said executive director of Georgia Ports Authority, Curtis Foltz. "Not only can it offload these enormous cargoes, but as seen in the recent yacht lift, our new barge crane can move super-heavy loads between terminals."
The yacht, built by Ocean Alexander of Kaohsiung, is destined for the Miami boat show.
