July 8 - The Breeddiep - an important connection for inland shipping at the mouth of the port of Rotterdam - is to be widened from 75 m to 350 m.

The Breeddiep, which connects the Splitsingsdam and the Rozenburg Peninsula, presently only allows one-way traffic due to the current and restricted visibility.

EUR16 million (USD17.7 million) is being invested into widening operations, which are expected to calm the current and substantially increase capacity. The costs will be shared equally between the Dutch government and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

The joint project aims to improve the port's hinterland connections by water. Preparations for the widening of the Breeddiep are already underway, and completion is scheduled for the end of 2016.
