January 22 - The first gate for the new locks on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal has been installed.
The steel rolling gate, which weighs 2,300 tonnes and has the dimensions 8 m x 57.6 m x 22.28 m, was transported into its final position using SPMTs.
The installation of the gates for the Panama Canal's new locks began in December 2014 at the Atlantic side of the canal, where two gates have already been installed.
Upon completion, the two new lock complexes will have a total of 16 gates - eight in the Pacific and eight in the Atlantic.
The Panama Canal expansion programme is currently 85 percent complete, says the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).
