February 27 - President Barack Obama has vetoed a bill from Congress that would have approved the Keystone XL pipeline.

The bill would have authorised TransCanada Corporation to construct the 1,179 mile (1897 km) pipeline, which has been under review by the Obama administration for over six years.

International media reports said that Obama's veto could intensify current clashes between the White House and congressional Republicans, and the move prompted immediate criticism from Obama's opposition, who have described the project as having the ability to create and improve both jobs and infrastructure.

However, Obama vetoed the legislation, not the pipeline itself, reports made clear. This means that the administration retains authority over the pipeline, giving the US President the chance to make a decision on the Keystone project himself.
