North Sea Port reported that all inland vessels calling at the gateway must use the automatic identification system (AIS) in Terneuzen.
Until November 1, 2019, AIS was only compulsory for inland vessels calling at Flushing and in Ghent. With the introduction of the system’s use in Terneuzen, movements of inland vessels can be traced throughout the 60 km cross-border port area.
North Sea Port said this this uniform tracking method facilitates traffic management and increases safety. It said the AIS tracking system is also important for interaction between the inland vessels.
