September 17 - A new global professional organisation for companies handling full scale project cargo and heavy lift shipments has been launched.
The UK-based Project Cargo Network (PCN) is a professional organisation established "to provide a networking platform for the world's top project cargo specialists, who want to increase their business by either referring one another or doing business directly with one another," says founder and director Rachel Humphrey, adding: "Our members handle the transportation of oversized and heavy items or shipments that consist of complex components that must be disassembled, shipped and then re-assembled. They also offer project cargo management."
PCN members' current projects come from numerous sectors including oil and gas, pulp and paper, automotive, construction, power and energy as well as aid cargo. Shipments include generators, turbines, reactors, boilers, towers, casting, heaters, presses, locomotives, boats, satellites, military personnel and equipment. In the offshore industry, parts of oil rigs and production platforms are also moved; some of these are also disassembled at the end of an installation's working life.
Humphrey has a considerable background in online freight activity: in January 2000, she launched Universal Freight Organisation, a worldwide network of independent freight forwarders; in 2007 she launched Import-Export-Cargo.com, a global leads directory; and last year, she launched Freightbook Ltd, an online advertising and business networking within the global logistics industry.
