December 9 - Meriaura's second EcoCoaster ship was christened Mirva at a ceremony in Kokkola, Finland.
The 5,000 dwt ice class 1A vessel measures 103 m long by 13.6 m wide. The EcoCoaster is a new ship concept developed by Meriaura in cooperation with Foreship and Aker Arctic Technology. The ship is the second delivery in a two sistership order. HLPFI reported that the first ship - Eeva VG - was delivered during October 2016.
Both ships were built in Royal Bodewes, Papenburg and are flying the Finnish flag.
Meriaura says that the EcoCoaster ships will have a considerably less environmental impact than conventional dry cargo vessels of same type and size. The hull and machinery have been optimised to work at a speed of 10.5 knots in open water conditions. A dual-fuel system is suitable for both biofuel and marine gas oil (MGO). Each ship is equipped with ballast water treatment systems, while the hull is painted with environmentally friendly and efficiency improving Ecospeed paint, said Meriaura.
