March 21 - Mammoet has worked against the clock to complete two back-to-back transportation assignments for Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) and BHP Billiton Iron Ore.
FMG contracted Mammoet to transport a Liebherr R996 digger, weighing over 650 tonnes, from the company's Christmas Creek mine to the recently-opened Solomon mine some 250 km away.
Mammoet used a Goldhofer trailer with six block trucks for the first part of the transport, and a double self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) for the last 6 km of the journey.
Prior to completing the final leg of the journey; Mammoet used the SPMT to transport a similar digger - a Liebherr R996B - for Billiton from Jimblebar to Whaleback, which required a high voltage power line to be removed en route.
Then the SPMT was returned to FMG's Solomon mine to complete the last 6 km leg of the Liebherr R996's transportation.
