June 17 - Mammoet has begun the delivery of components for Petronas' Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project in Malaysia.

HLPFI reported in March that the first three columns had been delivered to the material offloading facility (MOLF) in Tanjung Setapa, Johor for the project.

In total 13 columns will be transported from equipment manufacturer KNM Group's facility in Melaka to the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) development site.

The steam cracking columns, each of which measure around 76 m long with a diameter of 4.2 m, are moved 20 km on self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) from KNM's manufacturing facility to the quayside in Melaka, from where they are shipped by barge to Petronas' MOLF at Tanjung Setapa for discharge.

The MOLF in Tanjung Setapa consists of two jetties, with three berthing facilities, which are capable of receiving all manner of heavy, overdimensional and breakbulk cargoes.

Alongside Tanjung Setapa, another MOLF port in Teluk Ramunia will also be dedicated to serve the needs of RAPID project. Together, it is estimated that the two ports will handle around 4 million tonnes of cargo over the next three years.

Over the next few months Mammoet will deliver the remaining columns to the site.
