May 21 - South African crane contractor Elcon Crane Hire has taken delivery of a new 400-tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 mobile crane.
Previously a 250-tonne capacity LTM 1250-6.1 was the company's most powerful crane, so the new 400-tonne capacity model is major expansion for the South African company, says Liebherr.
The crane manufacturer explained that the LTM 1400-7.1 was the perfect fit for Elcon due to the local market requirements in terms of load capacity, crane size and transport facilities. The new crane can install its telescopic boom guying itself and only requires an auxiliary crane if the fixed jib or luffing jib needs to be installed.
Elcon took delivery of the LTM 1400-7.1 fully equipped with an 84 m luffing jib, which can reach hook heights of up to 128 m.
The company's new crane will mainly be used in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, primarily servicing the port areas in Durban and Richards Bay, the two oil refineries in the province, and some of the large mines in the region.
