India’s indefinite port strike, scheduled to start today (August 28), was averted at the last minute as government officials and unions agreed a new deal on wages, service conditions and pensions.

20,000 workers were set to walk out, affecting cargo handling activities at 12 of the country’s major gateways. However, according to Reuters, a five-year deal has been agreed.

Last week, the All-India Port and Dock Workers’ Federation said that the nationwide strike would have been a result of 31 months of failed contract negotiations.
