The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has opened its regional office for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in Alexandria, Egypt.
The region plays a critical role in global maritime trade – such as being home to the Suez Canal, which facilitates around 12 percent of global trade.
Amongst other notable figures, the opening ceremony was attended by the IMO secretary-general Arsenio Dominguez. He said: “This office will serve as a bridge, addressing regional maritime challenges by fostering collaboration, and ensuring that the voices and needs of MENA countries are effectively represented on the global stage.”
The regional presence office will focus on enhancing maritime safety, security, and environmental sustainability. It will serve as a centre for monitoring progress, enabling dialogue, and supplying tailored solutions to the region’s maritime needs.
Last month, the IMO issued HKC implementation guidance for cross-border movement of ships for recycling.
