January 23 - Sharjah based oil and gas industry services provider Petrofac has placed an order for a high-end offshore construction vessel, Petrofac JSD 6000.

The derrick lay vessel is a customised version of the ULSTEIN SOC 5000 developed by Dutch design company Ulstein Sea of Solutions. It will be built at the ZPMC shipyard in China.

The vessel will come equipped with a 5,000-tonne capacity revolving main crane and four deck cranes for heavy lift operations.

The vessel will also have a dynamic positioning system; a 2,000-tonne J-lay tower, two 750-tonne capacity deepwater winches and 600-tonne S-lay tensioners will be used for offshore installation works.

Yves Inbona, managing director of Petrofac's Offshore Capital Projects (OCP) business, commented: "We are delighted to be working with industry leaders on the design and build of the key components of the vessel. The Petrofac JSD 6000 will give us the ability to access top tier EPCI opportunities with a best-in-class multipurpose vessel."

Edwin van Leeuwen, managing director at Ulstein Sea of Solutions added: "We are very pleased that Petrofac selected us for designing their first offshore construction vessel."

Petrofac expects delivery of Petrofac JSD 6000 during early 2017.
