January 28 - Italy headquartered project forwarder Gruber Logistics' German division in Kreutzal has carried out a demanding heavy lift project for SMS SIEMAG - a Germany based metallurgy and rolling mill manufacturer.
Gruber Logistics shipped a large converter ring and bearer ring with total dimensions of 13 m x 12 m x 3 m and weighing approximately 160 tonnes. Gruber also shifted three converter parts measuring 9.5 m x 9.5 m x 3.5 m with a piece weight of between 80 - 100 tonnes respectively.
The equipment had to be delivered from Porto Maghera, Venice, to steel and mining multinational ArcelorMittal in Ghent, Belgium.
Gruber Logistics chartered a vessel equipped with on-board cranes to lift and transport the out-of-gauge machinery. Upon arrival in Ghent, the cargoes were loaded onto trailers and transported to the ArcelorMittal factory. The over-dimensional cargo was set down on to stands in the factory using vehicle hydraulics.
Two months of painstaking planning went into organising the project. The vessel took 14 days to travel between Porto Maghera and Ghent; a further two days were required to shift the machinery to the final jobsite. The project was completed on schedule and to the customer's satisfaction.
