Galveston Wharves in Texas will soon begin demolishing its decommissioned elevators and silos at the port of Galveston to make room for other types of cargo, including ro-ro cargo and giant wind turbine pieces.

Visualising ways in the port can be used more profitably, a USD 3.6 million contract to demolish the nearly 100-year-old facility was signed in June by the Galveston Wharves board of trustees.

Demolition could take up to 250 days, spread out across stages. Grant MacKay Demolition Company will use cranes and high-reach excavators to demolish the elevators and silos in pieces.

The concrete will be crushed onsite and used for fill and for levelling the area. The port is also looking into using some of the concrete rubble to fill in a slip in the West Port Cargo Complex as part of another major cargo expansion project.
