July 16 - In the first quarter of 2014, the turnover of OJSC Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg (SP SPb) was up by 4 percent compared with the same period in 2013, at 4.1 million tonnes.
Handling volumes of general cargo increased by 6 percent up to 3.1 million tonnes, while loose and bulk cargoes handled remained at the same level as in the first six months of 2013, at about 1 million tonnes.
The growth in the company's turnover was caused by the gradual recovery of demand in the merchandise market, in particular for ferrous metals, due to the decrease of stock reserves of the consumers, said SP SPb.
Handling of ferrous metals of SP SPb's main shippers increased by 14 percent up to 1.2 million tonnes.
Export cargoes handled increased by 14 percent up to 3.4 million tonnes, while import share decreased by 21 percent to 0.7 million tonnes.
