October 11- Fairmount Marine's tug, Fairmount Glacier has successfully assisted in the installation of the floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) Usan, offshore Nigeria.
For this operation Fairmount, the Rotterdam-headquartered marine contractor for ocean towage and heavy lift transportation, was contracted by Saipem Energies, which needed a 200 tonne bollard pull tug for this task.
FPSO Usan is one of the largest of its kind: 320 m long and 61 m wide, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea.
The Usan oilfield was discovered about ten years ago and is situated 100 km south of Port Harcourt, with water depths up to 850 m.
During the mobilisation of Fairmount Glacier from Durban, South Africa to Nigeria, the tug called at Pointe Noir for preparation, then proceeded towards the Usan field, offshore Nigeria.
Following its initial connection to FPSO Usan, Fairmount Glacier undertook almost nine weeks of continuous heading control and other general assistance to the Usan, before the FPSO was successfully installed and Fairmount Glacier commenced demobilisation.
