June 8 - Direct Logistics' Project Division, the GPLN member based in India, arranged multimodal operations to move a 280 tonne gas turbine from Charleston, USA to the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation power plant which is being built in the Indian stat
The turbine measured 5.0 m in diameter and 11 m in length and moved from Charleston to Mundra on Rickmers Jakarta.
Direct Logistics received the cargo at origin from a rail car and arranged temporary safe storage before loading. At Mundra, the shipment was discharged directly onto a barge for on-carriage to the final destination.
The company says that landside infrastructure from Mundra port to the Pipavav power plant was inadequate for the movement of a 280 tonne unit, so was moved from moved from Mundra to Jafrabad port by barge.
One of the biggest challenges of the shipment was the construction of a temporary jetty on the seashore close to the power plant site. The jetty was designed to permit the cargo to be discharged from barge using multi axle trailer. Direct Logistics also had to construct a bypass road from the jetty to the job site.
