July 10 - Crane Rental Corporation has lifted the 37.6-tonne hub of the new Orlando Eye observation wheel into place.
The hub was installed approximately 61 m above the ground; the centre of what will be a 122 m tall attraction on Orlando's International Drive, which is being constructed by Adena Corporation.
The hub was transported on Crane Rental's 13-axle trailer and lifted using the company's 600-tonne capacity Terex AC500-2 hydraulic truck crane with a sideways superlift (SSL) attachment.
Other work for the observation wheel is being completed by Crane Rental's 130-tonne capacity Grove RT9130E rough-terrain crane, which will remain onsite for the duration of the job. During the hub lift the rough-terrain crane lifted a work platform up 61 m, bringing a crew to attach the hub to the base structure.
The wheel itself will be constructed in sections and is scheduled to open in the spring of 2015.
