September 1 - Oy Procargo (Professional Cargo Care Ltd) and Ocean Knight Shipping, both WWPC Members, combined forces to arrange delivery of a 34 tonne metallic roll and other equipment from Finland to a paper factory near Shanghai in China.
The transportation was performed by airlift through a chartered Ilyushin 76TD-90VD from WWPC sponsor Ruslan International. The cargo was loaded by two cranes onto the plane using the sophisticated extension ramp/roller system and safely positioned into the aircraft by an internal winch system.
Claiming to hold the previous two records for the heaviest single piece loaded onto this type of plane, Procargo'smanaging director Wolfgang Karau said: "Using the skills and techniques of the existing fleet of Russian operated cargo airplanes of various sizes is common for global operating forwarders, such as our company. It is always a good experience to attend loading/offloading and flights with the cargo of clients, so one knows how these kind of extradordinary operations work."
In Shanghai, Ocean Knight Shipping pulled out all the stops to ensure safe offloading, customs clearance and inland transportation to the final jobsite.
Despite torrential rain in Shanghai during the time of the offloading operations, Ocean Knight's Project Manager, Evan Chen, managed to keep the time schedule agreed with crane operators, hauliers and airport authorities.
