May 14 - C.H. Robinson Project Logistics has transported a reaction tank and blow down drum from Swan Island, Portland, USA to Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. The machinery will be used in a stream assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) pilot plant near West El
The 25 tonne shipment had an overall volume of 497 cu m. The units measured 6.6 m x 6 m, and 9.4 m x 5.4 m respectively.
In order to avoid narrow mountain roads at the start of the journey, the over-dimensional cargoes were lashed onto two trailers and barged from Swan Island to the Port of Wilma, Washington on the Columbia and Snake river systems - a distance of 620 km.
Upon arrival at Wilma, the two trailers travelled the remaining 1,850 km journey over US and Canadian highways.
C.H. Robinson Project Logistics secured all the necessary transport permits and conducted a detailed route survey prior to the execution of the project to determine the most cost effective and safest route, whilst minimising the possibility of delays.
The entire journey took nine days to complete and the units were safely delivered to the Canadian jobsite.
C.H. Robinson Project Logistics - the project arm of Minnesota, USA headquartered transportation and logistics provider C.H. Robinson - is one of four companies representing the Project Cargo Network (PCN) in Canada.
