Year-to-date breakbulk volumes at the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) are up by 18.3 percent, compared to the same period last year, reaching 163,650 tonnes.
NWSA also saw record container volumes in July, handling 1,818,221 international teu so far in 2019. This surpasses the previous record set in 2005 of 1,801,175 teu and represents a 6.2 percent increase from 2018.
Total container volumes from January through July 2019 totalled 2,241,764 teu, a 6.4 percent increase from the same period in 2018.
July also marked the launch of the USD500 million Terminal 5 construction project in Seattle. Modernising the 185-acre (74.9 ha) container terminal will increase the port’s capacity to handle the largest container vessels, said NWSA.
