The port of Argentia in Canada is moving forward with its Cooper Cover Marine Terminal expansion project, which will double the quayside capacity.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has released the expansion project from further environmental assessment, subject to the following conditions: demonstration by the port that it upholds commitments made in its submission to government, the development of a waste management plan for the project, and reporting by the port that the conditions have been fulfilled.
Port ceo, Scott Penney, said: “Removing the project from further environmental assessment sends a clear message to industry that the Cooper Cove Marine Terminal Expansion project is viable, it is meeting its development milestones and is moving forward.”
The project will add three berths at water depths of 12.5 m and create 10 ha of adjacent laydown space. The new wharf development will also feature the latest in port electrification innovations and focus on decarbonisation.
The news follows the recent announcement that the port secured a CAD15 million (USD11.3 million) investment to support infrastructure developments that will allow it to capitalise on emerging opportunities in the offshore and renewable energy industries.
Further still, last year the port received investment of up to CAD38 million (USD28.9 million) under the National Trade Corridors Fund to improve cargo movement. The project will expand the existing Fleet Dock terminal, with the construction of approximately 460 m of berthing space and a ro-ro ramp, as well as increase the available dockside space by roughly 100,000 sq m.
