June 11 - Antwerp Port Authority has decided to permit the installation of photovoltaic systems within the port area, under certain conditions.
As a result, renewable energy can henceforth be obtained from solar power as well as wind and geothermal power, in line with the intentions for sustainable energy use laid down by the Port Authority in its Climate & Energy environmental vision. The decision by the board has been welcomed by private companies in the port area.
The Port of Antwerp, as one of Europe's most important centres for conventional, breakbulk and project cargoes, recently reported that project cargoes were 60 percent up during 2008, largely because Antwerp was chosen by a number of engineering, procurement, installation and construction (EPIC) companies, such as KBR and Bechtel, as a logistics hub. The port claims 220 sailings a month to most parts of the world, offering global coverage to EPICs.
