January 27 - Ainscough Crane Hire has completed a tandem lift for Galliford Try, at a new biomass plant in Barry, Wales.

Using two 55-tonne capacity Liebherr 1055-3.2 all-terrain mobile cranes, Ainscough Crane Hire offloaded an 11-tonne chimney stack from the transport vehicle to a secure storage area.

The chimney will be installed as part of the biomass plant's main furnace later in the year.

Ainscough operators positioned cranes either side of the 36 m chimney section for the tandem lift and positioned hooks on pre-fabricated points. According to Ainscough, as the top of the chimney stack weighed 3 tonnes and the bottom weighed 8 tonnes, the use of two cranes was vital to keep the lift secure and balanced.

The lift is the latest that Ainscough has performed during the construction of Barry's new renewable energy facility. Once complete, the biomass plant is set to provide renewable energy to around 22,000 houses per year.
