April 14 - Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has received five units of infrastructure equipment - the largest and longest heavy lift cargoes it claims to ever have handled in the Abu Dhabi Free Port.
The five units were unloaded for Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer) for the new carbon black and delayed coker plant, which is being built at the chemical refining complex in Ruwais.
The cargo, which had a combined weight of 3,367 tonnes and volume of 29,492 cu m, was shipped on the vessel Dongbang Giant No.1 from the South Korean port of Ulsan.
The individual pieces of equipment varied in weight from 140 to 1,531 tonnes, with the heaviest unit measuring 12 m wide and 116 m long, and the cargo was unloaded from the vessel onto the quayside by ro-ro operation using SPMTs with up to 76 axles.
The five large units will be stored in the Free Port for ten days before being reloaded onto a barge and shipped down to Ruwais.
The shipment involved close liaison between the ADPC operations team and Takreer to ensure smooth transshipment and arrangements for such a cargo, explained ADPC.
ADPC manages and operates the Free Port which is close to the Emirate's Zayed Port and has the space to handle heavy lift cargoes. There is easy access, said ADPC, and the quayside is reinforced to carry a weight of four tonnes per square metre.
