Hansa Heavy Lift has transported a large carousel and eight reels - weighing a total of 3,508.7 tonnes - from Newcastle in the UK to Lagos, Nigeria, destined for the Egina oilfield.

On behalf of Saipem, the heavy lift vessel HHL Lagos was mobilised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and was fitted with additional under-deck stiffeners and a spooling platform to strengthen the deck.

In cooperation with Saipem, Hansa installed the empty carousel, weighing 516 tonnes, on the vessel before sailing to Newcastle, where 1,641.4 tonnes of product was spooled onto the carousel.

Upon arrival at the port of Lagos, Hansa’s heavy lift vessel moored alongside Saipem’s offshore construction vessel Normand Maximus to unspool the products from the carousel.

Tom Kröger, project engineer at Hansa, explained: “Our in-house team of experienced naval architects carried out structural calculations to assess the structural integrity of the vessel.

“The team performed structural analyses to develop a tailor-made solution accordingly with the project requirements and designed and installed bespoke shim-plates on deck to support Saipem with the accommodation of the carousel.”
