Project freight forwarder Fracht Group has transported seven transformers, weighing 340 tons (308.4 tonnes) each, from İzmir, Türkiye, to Medicine Bow in Wyoming, USA.
The project was split into four sections, commencing with the shipment of the transformers to the USA. When they reached the port of Houston, the cargoes were transported by rail to a holding site, where they were individually transloaded onto a heavy-haul perimeter trailer for a 42-mile (67.6-km) journey – with the combination weighing a collective 1.2 million lbs (544.3 tonnes).
On one part of the route, the pavement on a bridge had been damaged by an earlier transport by another carrier. Although it had been repaired beforehand, Fracht said that it worked with its end client to secure a commitment for any future repairs, allowing the project to continue without further disruption.
Due to space constraints, the transformers were transferred to an 18-line trailer for final delivery to the substation.
Collaboration among stakeholders, including government entities and transportation providers, ensured that all transformers were successfully delivered to the substation in Medicine Bow, said Fracht. The multimodal project began in December 2023 and concluded in September 2024.
