The initial jacket foundation for the USA’s largest offshore wind project, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW), has been shipped from Port Esbjerg following its fabrication at the Danish port.

With the jacket foundation weighing approximately 2,445.6 tonnes, Port Esbjerg said that it is the only port worldwide that is equipped with the required infrastructure and capacity – including specialised heavy-lift cranes – to enable the production of foundations of this scale.

Custom-built heavy-load vehicles were used to transport the jacket foundations to the BigLift deck carrier. The equipment then ascended the ramps, before being secured and undergoing final safety checks.

The jacket foundation will be used as one of the supporting components for an offshore transformer station at Dominion Energy’s CVOW project, which is located around 40 km off the coast of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Once fully operational, the site will have 176 wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 2.6 GW.

Earlier this year, HLPFI reported that Sarens had assisted in powering the CVOW project.
