The third span of the new bridge in Genoa, Italy has been installed by Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri, as construction progresses amid the Covid-19 outbreak.
The third span weighed approximately 215 tonnes and was hoisted to a height of 40 m. With the deck in place, Salini Impregilo said that 960 m out of the bridge’s total length of 1,067 m has now been installed.
Two more sections still need to be installed. Once all the spans are in place, the deck will be lowered onto its permanent bearings.
The complete deck should be installed by the end of April, as work at the construction continues with heightened safety measures as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Salini Impregilo said that these precautions include the measuring of the body temperature of every worker who enters the site; the distribution of masks and hand sanitisers; the enforcement of the safe distancing rules; cleaning and disinfection of work sites and communal areas; and the reduction in the number of people who can travel in the same vehicle to and from the site.
Construction of the bridge is due for completion later this year. A video of the construction process can be seen below.
