Bolloré Logistics' industrial projects team was recently contracted by Base Titanium to provide Customs clearance and the transportation of a heavy piece of mining equipment from the port of Mombasa to a site in Kwale.
The size of the equipment meant that it could not be transported by road and so the Bolloré team conducted a local survey to formulate a plan to move the equipment by barge.
Due to the weight of the cargo, the barge was held for 48 hours awaiting high tide before the consignment, which was 17 m long and 6 m wide could be discharged from the mother vessel onto a heavy-duty modular trailer already positioned on the barge.
A local ferry was used to tow the barge 53 km to Likoni at the southern end of the island. It was then transported by road under escorts by police and Kenya Power.
On arrival at the site, the cargo was unloaded using Enerpac hydraulic jacks to lift the cargo, whilst steel beams provided support during offloading.
