May 4 - Daniela Behrens, Secretary of State of Niedersachsen's Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport (Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Employment and Transport) has ceremonially started the construction of Berth 4 at the Port of Cuxh
The EUR36 million (USD41.4 million) project will result in the development of a 240 m long quay with water depths up to 14.3 m.
Behrens stated: "With the construction of the berth 4 in Cuxhaven, we are taking an important milestone for the further development of the Port of Cuxhaven, which in recent years has expanded to become the leading offshore base port on Germany's North Sea coast."
With the impending establishment of a wind turbine manufacturing facility by Siemens at the port, the construction of the German Offshore Industrial Center and the new berth, Cuxhaven is looking to further strengthen its position in the offshore sector.
Completion is scheduled for end of next year and the new quay will be connected to the southeast section of the existing multipurpose terminal. 8.5 ha of additional storage and handling facilities will also be developed.
The state-owned Niedersachsen Ports company has signed a contract for the operation of the new berth with Cuxport, which will integrate the new facility into its existing business activities and continue to follow its multipurpose strategy.
