May 15 - In a presentation at the transport logistic exhibition in Munich last week, the Port of Venice celebrated its successful cooperation with the Grimaldi Group, now operating five departures a week to Greece and one weekly departure to the Near East
Two years ago the two companies launched a new ro-ro service from Venice to the Greek Port of Patras, operating three departures per week.
"Only two years ago on this occasion we announced the entry of the Port of Venice into the Grimaldi Group's 'Motorways of the Sea' network with the launch of the service to Patras," said Guido Grimaldi, corporate short sea shipping commercial director of the shipping group, adding that the two partners have since extended and enriched the services offered.
During the exhibition in Germany, the Port of Venice and Grimaldi also announced plans to explore the establishment of a shuttle service to connect the Verona rail freight terminal to the Venice Ro-Port terminal, which they claim would create a real bridge between Greece and the Balkans.
Pino Musolino, president of the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority, explained that cargo carried on the Grimaldi services grew by 30 percent year-on-year in 2016 and the Port of Venice is also forecasting double-digit growth for 2017.
