December 6 - The Port of Tyne has taken delivery of a brand new GBP3.5 million (USD5.72 million) mobile harbour crane, which will be capable of handling project cargoes as well as bulk and conventional freight.
The Liebherr LHM 550 crane has a maximum lift capacity of 144 tonnes at a radius of 54 m. The new crane rolled the heavy lift vessel MERI at Riverside Quay on December 4.
The Port of Tyne, Newcastle now operates a fleet of five mobile harbour cranes, two portal cranes and two container gantry cranes.
Steven Harrison, Port of Tyne chief operating officer, said: "This is another major investment in port infrastructure and will significantly improve the efficiency of our cargo operations."
The new crane will be fully operational by December 16, 2013.
