September 9 - Having acquired 120 axles of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), Brazilian specialised transportation company Transdata claims to own the largest self-propelled fleet in South America.
Transdata is also investing in seaborne equipment by purchasing ocean barges, tugs and other equipment.
The company explained that it has seen a trend towards larger and heavier machines due to facilities wanting to optimise space, construction time and productivity.
"The structural deficit of our roads hampers the feasibility of heavy and oversized freight transport," said Transdata, adding that it is often impossible to transport equipment only via road.
By acquiring SPMTs and maritime transport equipment, Transdata hopes to be able to facilitate multimodal operations, combining road, river and sea transport in order to avoid areas, where the transport infrastructure is less developed.
